WTR - Day 3

Sunday morning began with gender divided breakout sessions.  Wifey is writing this post, and as such can't speak to the men's session.

The ladies session was fantastic though!

**A wise woman embraces God's design for her home **

"The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian makes me a different kind of woman." - Elisabeth Elliot, Let me be a Woman

God's Priorities:
  1. Her relationship with God
  2. Respecting and supporting her Husband
  3. Teaching and Training her Children
  4. Everything else in her life - Outside activities, job, volunteer work, etc.
"A supportive wife has faith that God is in control of her life, her marriage, her children, her present circumstances, and her future"

Men-folk thrive on respect.

We can show respect to our husbands by listening, speaking words of gratitude, praise, and sometimes #ministryofhush, affirming his sexuality.

We have to save time and energy for what is most important.  Do our time and energy outlays line up with God's priorities above?

The final session of the conference focused on leaving a legacy.

As Christians, we are called to "not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" - Hebrews 13:16.

We do live in a broken and fallen world, and the reality of this will challenge our commitment to Christ and each other.

Following Christ is not for the lazy or faint of heart, but instead requires we keep on going despite attacks from Satan, discouragement when our efforts are not immediately rewarded.

WTR - Date Night

Saturday Night of WTR is "Date Night".  Participants are encouraged to make dinner or activity reservations and spend the evening 1:1.  We made reservations at So. Hubby was particularly excited about one of their signature desserts, the Chocolate Sack.

We followed our GPS to So, and were able to park about 3 car lengths from the front door.  What a blessing considering the heals wifey had chosen for the night!

The food was delicious if a bit expensive.

Wifey's Chicken and Gnocchi
Hubby's Chilean Sea Bass
A peek inside the Chocolate Sack
Yummy!

We actually tried taking selfies on our way to the restaurant ... apparently, we can't both be smiling normally in the same picture :)

Marriage after Dark - WTR Day 2 Part 3

The last session of our day ... "Marriage after dark" ...  covered Sex.

Highlights include:

  • Sex is not dirty.  Sex is not a duty.  Sex is divine.
  • Companionship (I like you), commitment (I need you), passion (I want you), and spiritual intimacy (We need God) are the necessary ingredients for a vibrant sexual relationship
  • Sex doesn't exist in a vacuum - it is impacted by our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual conditions.
  • Apparently, men and women are different.

WTR - Day 2 Part 2

As Day 2 of our conference progressed into the afternoon ... caffeine was needed ... again!  Due to a youth conference meeting nearby, the Starbucks downstairs stayed FULL!  We visited and left on a few different breaks, but did decide to wait it out at last.

Today we decided to wait in the crazy Starbucks Line
Long Lines make us Silly!

My and Vance's Angels!

Session 5, "What every marriage needs" focused on the gospel of Christ's work and how it impacts our marriages.

We can pursue oneness with our spouse because of our oneness with God.  Highlights below:
  • John 14:6 - "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me."" - Note the articles here ... "the" not "a".  Jesus is not one of many ways to salvation and fulfillment in life.  He is THE way.
  • God has the power to make all things new.  Even your at times broken marriage!  YES AND AMEN!!!  "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." - 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • Do we want God FOR God?  Do we approach God with a "What's in it for me" attitude?  This question reminds me of Natalie Grant's newish song, "More Than Anything."
  • Are we seeking God as a savior only?  We can't really have that.  He should also be our Lord and Leader.
  • The Holy Spirit gives us power to grow in our relationship with God and each other.
    • Power to understand the Bible - "...he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you" - John 14:26
    • Shows us sin in our lives
    • Helps us to Love others unconditionally
    • Helps us forgive others

Forgiveness is the Oil that keeps the engine of our marriage running smoothly.

After another needed break, we settled back in for the second to last session of the day:
      "We fight too"

The goal of marriage is not to be conflict free, but to handle conflict correctly when it occurs.

"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?  Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?  You desire and do not have, so you murder.  You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel" - James 4:1-2

    We're selfish - thus we fight.  - James 4:1-2 Wifey Version :)

The WTR leaders suggested that in marriage, you should have big fights over big things, and small fights over small things.  Do not allow big fights over small things.

    • If you win every argument in your marriage, you're married to a loser.
    • Your words are your instruments.  You can use them to craft or crash the image of God.
Since we know conflict will be part of marriage, how do we resolve it, ensuring that it doesn't destroy our oneness?
    1. Recognize it is coming from our own selfishness
    2. Lovingly confront where needed - Not every offense requires confrontation.
      • Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense - Proverbs 19:11 - #Ministryofhush
    3. Ask for forgiveness.  Grant Forgiveness.
      • Forgiveness is a choice to let your spouse free from the debt of their offense.  It is the first step toward rebuilding trust, and is an act of obedience to God.
      • Seeking forgiveness includes admitting to God and yourself that you were wrong.  It is done in humility.
      • Trust - is built through consistent behavior over time.
    4. Conflict is minimized in marriage when we actively choose to bless our spouses
      • According to Gottman, great marriages have a 5:1 positive:negative comment ratio.
      • We choose to bless even when our spouses don't deserve it.  This follows the example of Jesus.  "And while being reviled, He [Jesus] did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously" - I Peter 2:23

    WTR - Day 2 Part 1

Saturday Morning we were smart enough to leave with enough time to pick up coffee on our way to the conference!  The first session of the day focused on "Unlocking the Mystery of Marriage", and covered Gods purpose and plan for the Marital relationship.

A few things that jumped out to Wifey during this Session 1:

    • Our actions toward God don't dictate his actions toward us.  It should be likewise with our spouses.
    • Oneness in marriage is only possible when we consider our spouse before we consider ourselves.
    • Love:  pursuing imperfect people for a lifetime
    • On the challenges of parenthood - "God is the perfect parent and look how his kids turned out.  You kids aren't guaranteed perfection either.

The second session of the day introduced the idea of "oneness" in marriage.  This is a theme of the Family Life WTR.  Pursuing oneness.  Which I'm pretty sure is the opposite of selfishness.

There are two basic steps to reaching oneness - (1) Leave (to establish independence from your parents)  and (2) Cleave (to establish commitment to your spouse)

Both of these are processes and are impeded by various challenges and reality of the broken world in which we live.  We have natural differences such as gender, perspectives, temperaments, backgrounds, preferences, and roles.  Differences aren't good or bad, they just are.  Our weaknesses and sinfulness in contrast can be bad, but must be worked through and covered by grace.  We must admit that we have weaknesses such as impatience, indecisiveness, being overly talkative, disorganized, critical, or demanding.  We must also admit that we are selfish.

    • Rejecting your spouse is rejecting God's provision for your life.
    • Rejecting your spouse reflects negatively on the character of God - after-all, he gave you this partner for life.
    • Rejecting your spouse demonstrates unbelief and disobedience toward God.
    SNAP!

Lunch time arrived at the perfect time to allow us a break from some heavy teaching.  Along with some friends, we went to visited SoulFish Cafe.  #SoulFishwithmySoulMate

The highlight of Soulfish - This sign from the restroom :D bahahahh!

    WTR - Day 1

WTR begins on Friday night at 7:00 pm.  We wanted particular seats within the conference room, so we arrived at 5:00 when the doors opened ... which turned out to be an unnecessary effort.  Wifey works until 4:00 on Fridays, so arriving at 5:00 was an effort and did not allow time for Coffee or Food.  Not to fear, there is a Starbucks conveniently located on the first floor of the Marriott.

    Which closed at 5:00.

A quick google search revealed the next closest Starbucks - 1 mile away ... or about a 20-minute walk.  Luckily we had 1.5 hours to spare.

Did I mention it was raining?

    It was raining.

So we walked to Starbucks (and McDonald's) and arrived back at the conference room in time for Session 1! Our focus on surviving the rain, carrying our umbrellas and caffein precluded what would otherwise be some awesome pictures.  Tear!

The first session, titled "Why Marriages Fail" focused on the challenges that prevent us from achieving the oneness that God designed for our marriages.  For those of us who married after a decade or so of independent adulthood, these often include the expected process combining disparate backgrounds in areas such as our values, vocations, Religion, finances, or family history.

The second threat which can cause marriages to fail is our culture's pattern requiring marriages that are 50:50.  The third - the inevitable difficulties of life.  I have yet to peek into someone's marriage that doesn't include difficulties such as sickness, job loss, infertility, or family drama.  We all experience these seasons, and they can draw spouses closer together or drive them apart.  The fourth threat is attempting to escape from reality or search for fulfillment outside the marriage. The fifth threat, selfishness, colors the first four.

Can you imagine negotiating a new normal in merging backgrounds ... absent selfishness?  Simple.
Can you imagine selfishly only giving your marriage a half effort?  Nope.
Consider life's difficulties - more likely to draw selfless partners together?  I think so.

The second, "Can We Talk" focused on communication styles.  Consider these on several spectrums (with our self-identified choices below).

    Hubby in bold
    Wifey underlined

    Land-the-plane v. Enjoy-the-ride
    Share-your-feelings v. just-the-facts
    thinking-out-loud v. let's-take-turns

Each of these focuses on HOW we like to talk.  Do we prefer to take turns or to interject as thoughts occur?  Do we want to get straight to the point, or enjoy many tangents along the way?  Do we focus on emotions or logic in our conversation?  Knowing the natural tendencies of your partner will allow us to better understand when those tendencies conflict with our own as well as will allow us to better tailor our messaging to be best received.

The second part of session two covered communication levels ... you know how you will answer the greeter at the local Kroger as follows:

    Greeter:  "How are you"
    You:  "Fine, Thanks!"

but then, when your best friend calls, the conversation looks a bit different:

    Friend:  "How are you"
You: "I'm really struggling, we have some new processes ongoing at work and the resulting interpersonal conflicts is stressing me out.  Also, I'm so busy, my quiet time is falling by the wayside.  I want to make a difference for the Kingdom, but feel like I'm spinning my wheels"

That is the difference in communication levels ... ideally, you'd connect with your spouse at the deepest level, where you share WHO YOU ARE. To those of you who are married ... are you connected to and communicating with your spouse at deep levels?  Do they truly know you?

Here are some points on how to listen and communicate well that stuck out during our lesson:

    • Give focused attention - divorce your phone
    • Be each other's safe place.  Your spouse will not trust you with their heart if you aren't a safe place.
    • Focus on WHAT is being said, not THE WAY it is being said.
    • Sometimes saying nothing is the best answer.  Our speaker called this the "Ministry of Hush".  When we participate in the Ministry of Hush, the ministry of the Holy Spirit can do its job.  You are, in reality, not your spouses Holy Spirit.
    • Men gravitate to places of honor.  Women gravitate to places of love.  Speak to each other to show these things and your spouses will want to spend time with you.

Having started our marriage in weekly counseling, and read a number of communication style and conflict style books most of the concepts were not particularly new or shocking to us.

Our project for Friday night included discussing our individual responses to questions throughout the text and how various marriage killers impact OUR marriage.  We were up until 1:00 am discussing!  (If you've ever met Wifey, 1:00 am is not a time she acknowledges).

And they lived Happily Ever After

If there were ever a lie about marriage ... the ease of "Happily Ever After" is it. Romans 3:10-12 states:

    "as it is written:
    “None is righteous, no, not one;
    no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
    All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”"

My Wifey version of this would read something like "None is selfless, no, not one".  And I don't say this directed against Hubby.   The reality of the human condition (cough cough ... sinful) is such that we naturally tend to look to our own desires and benefit not that of others.  I believe we each have our Godly moments.  The days when he serves me selflessly or I him, but every single day, without failure?  Well if that were the case, we wouldn't have needed a Saviour, would we?

Can you imagine if Christ has approached his human life the same way?  We would have no hope of a future made possible by his imputed righteousness.  But that is a digression for another post.

Marriage - Marriage requires the unification of two disparate people.  And you know what?  That is not easy!  It requires humility and trust and vulnerability and a day-by-day submission to God's upside-down kingdom.  This weekend, Hubby and I had the opportunity to attend Family Life's Weekend to Remember.  This conference is designed as a get-a-way for you and your spouse to focus on your relationship and God.  Look for upcoming posts to discuss our experience and some takeaways which might be helpful to our readers!  Don't worry though ... i'll be sure and include pictures of all our meals and #coffee during the weekend too!  So, join me on this WerdehausenAdventure!
