Saturday Morning we were smart enough to leave with enough time to pick up coffee on our way to the conference! The first session of the day focused on "Unlocking the Mystery of Marriage", and covered Gods purpose and plan for the Marital relationship.
A few things that jumped out to Wifey during this Session 1:
- Our actions toward God don't dictate his actions toward us. It should be likewise with our spouses.
- Oneness in marriage is only possible when we consider our spouse before we consider ourselves.
- Love: pursuing imperfect people for a lifetime
- On the challenges of parenthood - "God is the perfect parent and look how his kids turned out. You kids aren't guaranteed perfection either.
The second session of the day introduced the idea of "oneness" in marriage. This is a theme of the Family Life WTR. Pursuing oneness. Which I'm pretty sure is the opposite of selfishness.
There are two basic steps to reaching oneness - (1) Leave (to establish independence from your parents) and (2) Cleave (to establish commitment to your spouse)
Both of these are processes and are impeded by various challenges and reality of the broken world in which we live. We have natural differences such as gender, perspectives, temperaments, backgrounds, preferences, and roles. Differences aren't good or bad, they just are. Our weaknesses and sinfulness in contrast can be bad, but must be worked through and covered by grace. We must admit that we have weaknesses such as impatience, indecisiveness, being overly talkative, disorganized, critical, or demanding. We must also admit that we are selfish.
- Rejecting your spouse is rejecting God's provision for your life.
- Rejecting your spouse reflects negatively on the character of God - after-all, he gave you this partner for life.
- Rejecting your spouse demonstrates unbelief and disobedience toward God.
SNAP!
