Snow In Arkansas

This February we adventured close to home!  Arkansas received a once-in-a-lifetime snow!!

Roads on day one -

Snowman #1

Snowman #2

Home Sweet Home

The puppers got in on the 'fun' too.

Many Thank You's to Jessica for this trick.  We laid out cardboard so as the snow fell and accumulated higher, Ellenor had a clean-ish place to go to the restroom!

On the Road Again!

We drove home from VA in an epic road trip.  In two days we crossed 7 states and traveled about 1,500 miles and 23 hours of actual drive time.

Video Link.  If you're reading from mobile, you'll likely need to click the link.

Along the way we stopped to capture pictures at each state-line.  The trip was long but beautiful!

The KY sign was on a bridge, so we took our group picture a mile down the road at the Welcome Center.

We Went To See Jesus

Today we have a special guest post from my blogger friend, Vance!  You may remember him and his wife who attended Weekend to Remember with us earlier this year.  If you enjoy theology or Christian living, you should check out his long-running blog, Ronin's JourneyWith that brief introduction, please enjoy the following.

~Wifey & Hubby
__________________________________________________________________________

I'm not sure how to start this. Hubby and Wifey asked me to guest post about my own adventure with my own wifey at The Great Passion Play in Eureka Springs. Particularly the Bible Museum attached to their Gift Shop.

I typically post about theology and Christian living on my own weirdly named blog, Ronin's Journey. When I started sending them pictures of 600+-year-old Bibles, they thought you guys would enjoy some theology and history as you travel vicariously through Werdehausen Adventures.

My wife and I had a rare opportunity to get away for a couple of days, so we headed to Eureka Springs, AR, home of the Christ of the Ozarks. We were last there in 2009, where we watched the Passion Play, a play about the last days of Jesus' life. They even had an ASL Interpreter (by request when I ordered tickets over the phone) for my wife who's Deaf.

This time we were more interested in seeing the Christ of the Ozarks again. It's a handcrafted 66-foot tall statue that was built in 1966. It is among the Top 10 tallest statues in America, the tallest being the Statue of Liberty.

Besides the play and statue, they have gift shops (for my wife) and museums for me. I went to the Bible Museum and started to nerd out. So much history surrounded me.

There is a page of the original manuscript of the Wycliffe Bible. It's 638 years old. John Wycliffe was born in 1330 and died in 1384. Because he butted heads with the Catholic Church over certain doctrinal issues he was arrested.

In 1380 he began translating the Bible into English from the Latin Vulgate because he believed all Christians should have access to the Bible, by hand. I get a cramp just thinking about it.

The Church had this to say about it;
"By this translation, the Scriptures have become vulgar, and they are more available to lay, and even to women who can read, than they were too learned scholars, who have a high intelligence. So the pearl of the gospel is scattered and trodden underfoot by swine."

He was a Protestant before there was a Reformation. You could say he was one of the first.

In the next case, there was a page from the Gutenberg Bible from 1455 that was printed on calfskin. 568 years old, the Gutenberg Bible is the first big book printed on a printing press that had a movable metal type. That greatly sped up the printing process.

Before it's invention everything was hand copied. Cramps again. Or the typeface was carved from wooden metal blocks.

Moving down to the next case, opened up, was an ornate Martin Luther Bible from 1599. Who's that?
Martin Luther's the man who unintentionally started the Protestant Reformation in 1517 when he nailed the 95 Theses to the church's door.

He wanted to debate, instead, it spread as a call for reformation.

By 1534 he had completely translated (with help) the Bible into German from the original Greek and Hebrew. This made it more accurate than the previous translations from the Latin Vulgate.

Turning to my left, I saw artifacts that were almost 2,000 years old. Among them were a few newer things like a wineskin made of goatskin. I sent Wifey and Hubby a picture of it, asking if they would drink from it.

For some reason, they declined.

Looking at it made a couple of verses from Luke more vivid. In Luke 5:37-39, Jesus said, "And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’

That's essential leather, and it gets stuck in that shape and size as it dries. Rigid. I could see how it would burst as new wine fermented in the old skin.

Looking up, I saw the famous 'widow's mite'. It was smaller than a penny.

On the next shelf were lamps. I was attracted to the 1st Century lamp. It's small and could fit into my palm.

I'm not sure if it's the type of lamp referenced in the Sermon on the Mount;
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

I am pretty sure it's the lamp mentioned in the Parable of the Lost Coin:
"Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.

Can you imagine trying to find a coin with such a tiny lamp?

You would really have to want to find it. That's why it's such a good parable as an example of God's tenacity to bring back lost people.

The best part of the Museum is that it's free. There are other free attractions there like a History Museum with a focus on making a case for the Christian Worldview. As a $1 Dollar Apologist, I mostly enjoyed it, though I disagreed on a couple of areas.

We didn't go through The Marketplace, but that's okay. Gives us something to do the next time.

If you're ever around northwest Arkansas then stop by Eureka Springs. You can spend hours at the Passion Play alone. A day shopping in the Historic District (good luck finding parking though). A few miles outside the city there is a big cat refuge called the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge that has lions, tigers, and bears (Oh MY!) and more. We spent hours there too.

It won't disappoint.

Citizens Police Academy

This month we participated in and graduated from the Citizens Police Academy for our home town of Sherwood, AR.

The graduation celebration was complete with cake and punch!

One field trip during our time in the academy was to the Police training range.  We had the opportunity to shoot a variety of firearms.  Wifey suprised the SWAT trainers who were overseeing our activity.

Another day we took a field trip to the county jail ... we're nervous!

Jail food:

They did, however, let us leave at the end of the evening!!

The Circle of Life

In late November 2017, Wifey spied a facebook advert announcing presale tickets for the upcoming Lion King Musical to open November 28, 2017.  She had spent the month before "liking" and "following" Disney, Lion King, Lion King Musical, etc on various social media platforms in the hopes of scoring an invite to just such a presale.

As the countdown to the sale opening began she was glued to her web browser and scored two tickets for the show 5 months ahead!  On the calendar it went, and the long wait in anticipation began.

When the weekend of our show finally arrived, Hubby and Wifey dressed all fancy for our night out and braved the humidity and rain to head downtown.

Excitement builds seeing The Musical's trailer parked outside our venue.

We intended to spring for garage parking next door to the performance venue.  After sitting in rainy traffic watching folks walk towards the venue, we realized the garage was already full and we'd have to venture out for street parking.

Hubby handled parking like a pro, and we pulled out our umbrellas to begin the 4 or 5 block walk back to Robinson.

This was our first visit to Robinson after a recent historical renovation of the site.  We hear a rumor the team that handled the renovation was pretty great!

See the man in the right foreground in jeans,
yellow vest, and white hat?  That's Wifey's Dad!

We were far from the only umbrella users.

We settled in and half-enjoyed an amazing play.  By half-enjoyed, Wifey enjoyed every last second of the music and the costumes and the story and the experience.  And hubby ... tolerated it.  :)  Note: next musical ... girls night out!

One improvement we would recommend should The Lion King folks read this blog (likely I know) ... include captions or lyrics for your songs.  We struggled to understand some of the dialogue, which greatly makes things more challenging to enjoy. Wifey previously saw Hairspray in Shanghai.  The show was performed in vocal English, but Mandarin subtitles were displayed throughout above the stage ... so it IS doable.

WTR - Day 3

Sunday morning began with gender divided breakout sessions.  Wifey is writing this post, and as such can't speak to the men's session.

The ladies session was fantastic though!

**A wise woman embraces God's design for her home **

"The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian makes me a different kind of woman." - Elisabeth Elliot, Let me be a Woman

God's Priorities:
  1. Her relationship with God
  2. Respecting and supporting her Husband
  3. Teaching and Training her Children
  4. Everything else in her life - Outside activities, job, volunteer work, etc.
"A supportive wife has faith that God is in control of her life, her marriage, her children, her present circumstances, and her future"

Men-folk thrive on respect.

We can show respect to our husbands by listening, speaking words of gratitude, praise, and sometimes #ministryofhush, affirming his sexuality.

We have to save time and energy for what is most important.  Do our time and energy outlays line up with God's priorities above?

The final session of the conference focused on leaving a legacy.

As Christians, we are called to "not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" - Hebrews 13:16.

We do live in a broken and fallen world, and the reality of this will challenge our commitment to Christ and each other.

Following Christ is not for the lazy or faint of heart, but instead requires we keep on going despite attacks from Satan, discouragement when our efforts are not immediately rewarded.

WTR - Date Night

Saturday Night of WTR is "Date Night".  Participants are encouraged to make dinner or activity reservations and spend the evening 1:1.  We made reservations at So. Hubby was particularly excited about one of their signature desserts, the Chocolate Sack.

We followed our GPS to So, and were able to park about 3 car lengths from the front door.  What a blessing considering the heals wifey had chosen for the night!

The food was delicious if a bit expensive.

Wifey's Chicken and Gnocchi
Hubby's Chilean Sea Bass
A peek inside the Chocolate Sack
Yummy!

We actually tried taking selfies on our way to the restaurant ... apparently, we can't both be smiling normally in the same picture :)
